SENTER Precision Fault Location Device For Overhead Distribution Lines

SENTER Precision Fault Location Device For Overhead Distribution Lines

The device adopts double-ended fault location technology. Monitoring points are installed at intervals along the line. Fault traveling wave signals are collected to first identify the fault section, then locate the fault within the section. For any fault in the section, the two nearest fault location devices perform double-ended ranging.

Distributed traveling wave fault location effectively mitigates errors caused by inaccurate line length, wave speed deviations, traveling wave attenuation/distortion, and reflected/refracted interference waves, significantly improving location accuracy.

Monitoring terminals are installed on both sides of the fault line to capture the initial traveling waves arriving at the two points, enabling double-ended positioning. As shown in Figure 1, points M and N are monitoring points with installed terminals. A fault occurs at point C between M and N. The initial traveling wave generated at C propagates toward both substations at speed v, arriving at M and N at times \(t_M\) and \(t_N\), respectively. The distance from the fault point to each monitoring point is calculated using Formulas 2-1 and 2-2:

System Functions

The system backend supports data storage, processing, and analysis. Equipped with a 4G global communication module, the device transmits data wirelessly to the backend. Through backend analysis and algorithms, it enables online monitoring of overhead distribution lines and precise fault location. Built on a B/S architecture, the backend is deployed on cloud servers, providing dedicated user space. Users can access the monitoring software anytime, anywhere via the Internet or mobile APP to view line operation status.

Current Monitoring

View installed fault location devices and monitoring data via search and query functions in the data management interface.

Fault Alarm

The system supports configuring user-specific GIS maps based on on-site line conditions. Operators can access the monitoring interface via the control center or web browser to view real-time operation status of overhead distribution lines. When a fault occurs, the system highlights the fault line, displays an alarm popup with the fault location, and automatically sends SMS alerts to relevant operation and maintenance personnel.

Event Waveform Display

View transient traveling wave waveforms captured by fault location devices from the double-ended event list. Waveform data reflects line operation status and fault location details.

Alarm Records

The system automatically pinpoints fault points and sends notifications via SMS or APP push to operation and maintenance personnel, facilitating daily monitoring and maintenance. Historical fault data can be filtered via the search function in the alarm list.
